Has there ever been a religion that on balance, has made it's adherents merciful?

Jainism, to the extreme. Buddhism by default of tolerance and patience and metta, Christianity on paper but not as much in reality as you'd expect. Maybe because there are more Christians than Buddhists or Jains, and it just seems that there are more hateful, hurtful Christians, I don't know.
